Becoming a Steelworker was an easy decision. The journey was a long one - but one that I would do again and again., especially knowing that at the end of it all, we would feel empowered. We have a collective voice to make our workplace better for everyone. I work for a for-profit home and I’ve experienced short-staffing, being underpaid, working in questionable conditions and overworked. Now with the Steelworkers, we have a hopeful future, we are equals and we are no longer alone. Through the USW at our workplace, we gained education and support from them. We are no longer fearful. We are no longer silent.”

I started working for this company in September and by February we joined the United Steelworkers Union.  We had our first collective agreement by April 1, with what was most important to our members: higher wages, paid vacation time, a two-year contract with benefits and seniority.     I was told by my members I would never get a union in our workplace; I would never get the water off the floor; I would never get the roof repaired and a lot of other safety issues corrected.  Things wouldn't change, it has been this way for years.  With the help of the USW, we accomplished a lot in our first year.   We now have stewards in place, a grievance committee and a Joint Health and Safety Committee.”

My local union represents more than 7,500 security guards in Ontario. The United Steelworkers Union is fully committed to educating its membership. Members are offered extensive internal/external educational programs to help protect their rights. I am fortunate to be part of various educational and mentorship programs United Steelworkers offer. As a young worker, my experience with the union is life-changing and opportunities within the institution to serve the membership are endless.”

Being a USW member has changed my work life.  I never imagined that it would be possible to fall back in love with what I did.  USW made it possible to empower myself and my coworkers to initiate positive change in our workplace.  By becoming a USW member, it has created a respectable equal playing field for management to listen to our front-line employees. USW has showed me that with the power of unity, the creation of collective agreements give employees the opportunity to have a say in their workplace.”
