The Reality

Across Canada, things are getting harder for people in all sorts of jobs. But the reality is, it doesn’t need to be this way – you can be part of making positive changes.

Wages are too low for millions of Canadians, while the cost of living is increasing.

Corporate Canada’s profits are going up and employee wages can too, if we work together to negotiate better compensation.

Millions of people don’t have a pension plan, but as a union, we believe everyone deserves retirement security. Union members are working hard to protect existing pension plans and to create new ones.

Too many people are working multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet. While some may appreciate the flexibility of a part-time job, full-time work should also be an option! Too many employers are too reliant on part-time and casual positions, and this poor work-life balance means families are paying the price.

Majority of Canadians hold favourable views of unions.

"A majority of Canadians — 56 per cent — hold favourable views of unions, and an even larger majority opposes “right to work” laws backed by some Conservatives, a new survey finds.

The Harris/Decima survey, carried out for the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT), found 70 per cent of Canadians say unions are “still needed,” compared to fewer than 30 per cent who say they are obsolete."

Harassment or bullying on the job is a reality for too many people. There’s more and more recognition that harassment and bullying at work is a problem that can be fixed. By law, you are entitled to a safe workplace – and that includes freedom from harassment and bullying. We can work together to make this happen.

Workers need a voice on the job. More and more people support the work that unions are doing to make the changes we need.
